Data Journalist

Responsibilities

  • Research and gather climate-related data from various sources, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

  • Transform complex data into compelling and accessible stories for publication on NESS websites and social media platforms.

  • Collaborate with data visualization experts to incorporate data-driven elements into articles.

  • Cover local and international climate-related events, policies, and developments with a data-driven approach.

  • Conduct interviews with experts and stakeholders to gather insights for data-driven stories.

  • Stay up-to-date with climate science, environmental policies, and data trends.

 

Preferred Background / Interest

  • A keen eye for data and experience working with datasets.

  • Passion for environmental issues and climate change.

  • Proficiency in data visualization tools or languages such as Excel, Tableau, or Python (desired, not required).

  • Good command of the English language. 

  • Conversational Cantonese language skills would be appreciated.

  • Basic understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change.

Data Wizard

  • Curate and extract pertinent data from diverse online sources using custom scripts.

  • Develop creative and impactful data visualizations for NESS's websites, social media, and publications.

  • Collaborate closely with data journalists and policy experts to analyze and illustrate data-driven narratives.

  • Craft dynamic and engaging data visualizations, infographics, and animations from extensive datasets.

  • Develop interactive web applications utilizing Python-based frameworks to showcase data insights.

 

Preferred Background / Interest

  • Proficiency in Python programming for efficient web scraping and data manipulation.

  • Experience with popular data visualization libraries like Matplotlib, Seaborn, and Plotly.

  • Strong technical aptitude for designing interactive web interfaces using Python frameworks.

  • Enthusiasm for transforming intricate data into captivating visual stories.

  • Familiarity with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change principles.

  • Passion for applying technical prowess to drive societal and environmental impact.

Policy Analyst

  • Write articles and op-eds advocating for evidence-based climate policies and sustainable practices.

  • Conduct interviews with policymakers, experts, and stakeholders for in-depth analysis.

  • Collaborate with data journalists and visualization experts to integrate data-driven elements.

  • Cover NESS events, projects, and initiatives from a policy perspective.

 

Preferred Background / Interest

  • Understanding of public policy and advocacy.

  • Passion for environmental issues and climate change.

  • Strong writing skills and the ability to communicate policy information effectively.

  • Good command of the English language.

  • Conversational Cantonese language skills would be appreciated.

  • Basic understanding of SDGs and climate change.
